On Saturday 22nd September I took part in one of the most scenic marathons I’ve ever entered – the Giant’s Causeway Coastal Marathon. I am very familiar with the Antrim coast and the marathon was also a good excuse to visit my father, who lives an hour’s drive from the Causeway.
The entire race route passes through magnificent coastline scenery with fine views of wide bays, sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and offshore rocks, all of which characterise the Causeway coast. The route passes close to the Giant’s Causeway Stones, which are just amazing.
The weather was spectacular, which is not always the case in this particular part of the world. Many a time I’ve walked along the Causeway path in torrential rain! Last Saturday, however, the sun shone, showing the coastline off in all its glory.
It was a tough run – virtually entirely on trails and beach – with lots of steps! Probably due to the latter I suffered from severe leg cramps and was subsequently slower on the second half (it was an out and back course).
There were 174 finishers in the marathon (there were other options of an ultra, half marathon and 10km) and the winning time was 3:26:59. I finished 39th, and 1st lady, in 4:35:11.
It was a fabulous event with a great atmosphere. I would certainly recommend it if anyone fancies a trip over to the north of Ireland. Although I wouldn’t bank on the weather being as superb as it was last weekend.
