Black Mountains Trail Ultra

Reports

Seeking some challenging climbs, I entered the Black Mountains Trail 50km ultra in the Brecon Beacons, which was held on Saturday 13th July. Set at the Perth-y-Pia Outdoor Activity Centre, there were four distances to choose from. With a total elevation of 2,140m in the ultra, there were plenty of energy sapping steep climbs. The route went high up into the Black Mountains to summit Waun Fach, the highest peak. Although a tough race, with lots of technical sections, the route was well signed and the views were breathtaking. Overall it was a well organised event with a great atmosphere.

The winning men’s/women’s times were 5:09:01 and 6:35:58 respectively. I was 33rd overall and third lady in a time of 6:47:43. I was really pleased as I only overtook the lady who was in third place at 46km and then managed to overtake another five guys in the closing km.

A great race and an enjoyable weekend away – even managed a climb up Sugar Loaf on Sunday morning.
