Eastbourne Golden Mile and 5k Race

Reports

This morning long after the Staplehurst 6 had claimed their prizes, the Eastbourne 6 were preparing to race both a mile and a 5k along Eastbourne promenade in the blazing sunshine (no shady country lanes for us!)

The Mile kicked off at 10am and was a straight line course along the promenade back to the “start” – where the 5k started some 45 mins or so later. The 5k then went back to the mile start, did a turn round and then went past the start/finish for half a mile or so and then back with the only incline in each race about 200m from the finish – thankfully! We did however have to dodge the hundreds of amblers, children on bikes and tourists along the promenade together with the land train at one point – all of which made for interesting wiggles and somewhat frustrating yells of “runner coming through” at some points!

Half way through the mile I had decided that there was no way that I was going to run the 5k as it was just too darn hot but I somehow found myself on the start line for that race too. Tom and Chris decided to be gentlemen and escort Stella round as a cool down from the mile – the photos are brilliant! It’s quite tough racing a 5k after you have raced a mile!

Not a massive field but as they say – you have to be in it….

Well done to everyone (especially Stella for her first sub 7 mile)as it really was scorching out there today – and we seemed to come away with the bulk of the prizes (bottles of wine) so a very successful morning – finished off by a dip in the sea.

Don’t forget – next week it’s Deal 10k! See you there!!!
