Club Record: Alex Reid (and a bit of history)

News

Last Friday 13th September certainly didn’t prove to be unlucky for Alex Reid.

Running in the Friday Night Under the Lights (FNUL) 5k at Battersea Park, Alex set his 8th club record of the year by improving his own Senior Men 5k record, with a time of 14.33.

In the same race Liam White ran 14.49 and Dillon Hobbs ran a PB of 14.56 becoming the third harrier ever to break the 15 minute mark.

It’s the first time that three male harriers have run sub 15 minutes for 5k in the same race.

Congratulations to Alex, Liam and Dillon.

Abit of history…..

The first Senior Men’s 5k record was 16.50 set in August 1988 by Chris Elvy, which was broken by Andy Howey in September 1991, running a time of 15.30 in Battersea Park.

This record stood for nearly thirty years until August 2019, when Billy Hobbs shaved 2 seconds off (15.28) in a race also in Battersea Park.

Liam White then broke this record in September 2022 – again in Battersea Park – with a time of 15.13, before being the first harrier under 15 minutes a year later, when he ran 14.58 after a journey to the Mid Cheshire 5k in August 2023.

Breaking the August/September sequence, Alex Reid improved the record in February this year, running 14.41 at the FNUL race in Battersea, before setting the latest record of 14.33 last week.

Fabulous running all and if you happen to be in Battersea Park any August or September, you just don’t know what you might see….

Cheers
